NORTH ATLANTIC HOT-SPOT

is an educational documentary video produced by Kibo Productions Limited. Aimed at secondary school and undergraduate students, the video entertainingly explores the geology of Iceland, how the island evolved and why it is so volcanically active.

Iceland's volcanic zone has provided understanding of the mechanism of ocean spreading and continental drift and the programme includes up-to-date information from recent research. The concept of the mantle plume or 'hot spot' is presented, a current theory accounting for the intense volcanic activity found in Iceland and certain other parts of the world.

The volcanic nature of Iceland has had a direct effect upon its inhabitants, both in terms of natural disasters and the economic advantages of abundant geothermal energy. Original material of broadcast quality was shot throughout Iceland and archive footage of recent volcanic eruptions is included, in particular, of the 1973 Heimaey eruption which forms the climax to the film. Iceland is a land of fantastic contrasts with spectacular secenery that retains much of its natural wilderness.

The running time of the video is approximately 57 minutes. The standard version has a voice-over narration in English but an alternative version can be supplied that has no narration, but with a blank track onto which you can record your own narrative, for example in any other language. Copies can be provided in various video formats (PAL/NTSC standard VHS, S-VHS, Hi-8, U-matic SP high-band, Betacam SP, DVD, etc.). Standard VHS PAL copies are priced at UK£35 (US$56) each; if another format is required, please contact us for quotes.
